St. John's Wort is traditionally harvested on Midsummer/St John's feast day which also happens to be the Holy day of Voodoo. The plant's yellow flowers symbolize the sun and as such it is a perfect symbol of Midsummer celebrations.
Hung in the home for protection against evil. It's often mixed with Frankincense tears for this and burned with incense. A spring of the herb carried in the pocket, or carried in a bag around the neck was a sure charm to keep away the devil. For love and divination.
